I was sent the link to this documentary by a friend a week ago, and with the first few minutes of the documentary I was engrossed, captivated and completely lost in the world of Ariella. The cinematography is beautiful. The stories are rich! 


Listening to the story of our beloved Prophet S and Khadeeja always brings tears to my eyes and this was no different! 


I did not know Ella Collin’s story, even though we talk about Malcol X a lot, it is surprising that the woman who superseded him in Islam, hajj and advised him, became his pillar and support system, is hardly known in the Muslim circles! 


Another story that mesmerized me was Taj Mahal and Shah Jahan. It seemed more of a love story between Shah Jahan and His Creator through Taj Mahal than between Shah and his wife the way it was described in the film with the carefully arranged inscriptions from the Quran. This film makes me want to do more research on this aspect of the Taj Mahal! 


I also loved Rumi’s ending of Layla Majnun and how everything comes together at the end!

Director: Farah Nabulsi | Writer: Farah Nabulsi  Cast: Saleh Bakri, Imogen Poots, Muhammad Abed Elrahman “One of yours is equal to a thousand of mine.”  Directed by Farah Nabulsi, The Teacher gives the audience a harrowing glimpse of life under occupation, their means of resistance and survival, and bonds that form as a result. The film delves into the intricate realities and challenging decisions Palestinians in the West Bank have to make as a result of systemic injustice and oppression that they face by the hands of the brutal occupation. Nabulsi describes the film as a “human drama in a political landscape” and a “story about characters that represent a severely marginalised and underrepresented people," stating that she "needed to make this film to cope with the injustice I've witnessed .” The film explores the complex relationship between a teacher and a student who unexpectedly form a bond to cope with the loss of their loved one, to heal, and find peace....

The drama is finally beginning to settle into its intended trajectory. The frequent references to the 1947 India–Pakistan Partition and the feudal system are no longer random; they tie directly into Nisa’s backstory. Her family, uprooted from India, migrated to Pakistan and had to rebuild their lives from scratch with very limited resources. While some migrants may have embraced the new homeland without resentment, others—like Nisa’s uncle—carried the scars of displacement. His bitterness stems from a belief that his sacrifices were never acknowledged or rewarded. This bias is particularly visible in his disdain for Meeran, even before meeting him, simply because Meeran belongs to a wadera family—a system infamous for exploiting power in Pakistan. Interestingly, Meeran defies the stereotype. Unlike the typical cruel landlord, he is nuanced, showing a different side to the feudal identity.
