Jamaa Taqseem deserves credit for addressing the challenges of the joint family system.

ZOOMING IN ON ONE OF THEM FOR NOW

THE MALE IN LAWS, NON MAHRAM, HIJAB AND PRIVACY

Islam doesn’t prohibit the joint family system, but it also doesn’t prefer it, mainly because it naturally blurs the boundaries Allah has set between mahram and non-mahram relatives. When brothers, cousins, or other non-mahram men live in the same home, it becomes difficult for women to observe the privacy and hijab that Islam emphasizes.

The Prophet ď·ş specifically warned about the danger of free interaction with a brother-in-law, calling him “death” to stress the seriousness of the boundaries. In a joint family system, these boundaries are often the first to disappear.

So while there are benefits of joint family system there are some issues too like the loss of privacy, modesty, and clear limits that Islam considers essential for healthy family life and Jamaa Taqseem deserves credit for highlighting one of these!
